IndyMac

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-indymac12-2008jul12,0,6071779.story

IndyMac, which once employed 10,000, fell prey to a classic run on the bank, and regulators singled out Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) as having helped to fuel massive withdrawals. On June 26, Schumer said in letters to the FDIC, the OTS and two other federal agencies that IndyMac might have "serious problems" with its loan holdings.
"I am concerned that IndyMac's financial deterioration poses significant risks to both taxpayers and borrowers," he wrote. The bank "could face a failure if prescriptive measures are not taken quickly."
That public warning prompted depositors to pull $1.3 billion out of accounts between June 27 and Thursday.
"This institution failed today due to a liquidity crisis," John M. Reich, director of the OTS, said at a news conference Friday afternoon. "Although this institution was already in distress, the deposit run pushed IndyMac over the edge."
Schumer said in a statement that the cause of IndyMac's failure was "poor and loose lending practices" that should have been prevented by more active regulation. Later, a Schumer spokesman said: "Mr. Reich, a political appointee, should be spending less time playing politics and more time doing his job."

Schumer should be drawn and quartered, his statement was ill advised as it is, but his arrogant comment about Reich not playing politics was just crap. What in his statement was politics?

Schumer's spokesman just makes him seem childish and ignorant, he made a stupid comment and then tries to minimize it by pointing a finger somewhere else.

Global Warming

Brilliant quote from a brilliant man.

"I have no doubt that global - that a trend of global warming exists. I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with. To assume that it is a problem is to assume that the state of the earth's climate today is the optimal climate, the best climate that we could have or ever have had and that we need to take steps to make sure that it doesn't change.

First of all, I don't think it's within the power of human beings to assure that the climate does not change, as millions of years of history have shown, and second of all, I guess I would ask which human beings - where and when - are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now is the best climate for all other human beings. I think that's a rather arrogant position for people to take."

Romney

Quoted CNN Blog.

"

McCain hopes to paint Obama as a politician who puts party and self-interest above the needs of the nation, claiming that the Illinois senator has “never been a part of a bipartisan group that came together to solve a controversial issue”.

This morning, Romney faithfully repeated that charge. When I pointed out that Obama reached across party lines to work with Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Indiana, on a non-proliferation measure, and with Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Oregon, on increasing gas mileage requirements, Romney shot back, saying that “Actually, on both cases, you’re talking about two liberal positions, non-proliferation as well as the gasoline mileage."

"

I believe his point was that Obama "reaching across the aisle" and coming together to pass a bill resulted in something that was strictly in line with the liberal position on those issues. This is a great thing for a liberal to point out to other liberals but it should hardly make conservatives (or right leaning moderates for that matter) confident that he can truly be bi-partisan.

He reaches across the aisle to tempt weak moraled Republicans to his side, and then spins the phrase as if he met them half way.

Romney v. Giuliani

I recently found a striking parallel between Mitt Romney and Rudolph Giuliani.

Mitt Romney is the only Presidential Candidate who has never been beaten in any state by Ron Paul.

Rudy Giuliani is the only major Presidential Candidate who has never beaten Ron Paul.

(While funny, this is not quite true, Giuliani squeaked by in New Hampshire, beating Ron Paul by barely 2,000 votes.)

Democrats,

When you go to the polls and cast your vote in the Primary Election, I want to make sure you really think about why you are voting.

You have the opportunity to create an historic first for America, electing either the first woman or the first African-American.

I want to take a moment and address the concept of electing a woman to the Presidency (the African-American thing makes absolutely no difference). First, the general fear is that a woman would be weak or soft, possibly typified by Clinton's crying jag just before the New Hampshire Primary. My first reaction in watching the clip is that she is frustrated by the fact that she really truly believes in what she is doing and everyone misreads her and judges her as false and insincere. Now if she was crying for this reason, I really do sympathize with her and she goes up in my estimation. However, an analysis by Dick Morris (who apparently knows her pretty well) that I saw later that night, pointed out that it is more in her personality to be crying at the fact that she is doing everything right and not succeeding and so she is frustrated. Now, to criticize what I am about to say as being chauvinistic is just misdirecting my point (If Obama had cried under similar circumstances, or any man for that matter, his candidacy would be over, it is very much more acceptable in a woman). Hillary Clinton crying out of frustration typifies everything the nation fears would happen if we elected a woman. This does not go to show that I am against a woman President, just that I am against Hillary Clinton.

Bhutto, for example, was a horrible Prime Minister of Pakistan, but not because she was a woman. In every aspect that people would associate a woman being weak on, she was very strong. In Plain English, she had balls.

All this being said, if I were voting in the Democratic Primary (I am not, Vote Romney '08), I would vote for Hillary Clinton (and if the Republican's stupidly nominate Huckabee, I will probably vote for her in the General Election). Here is my reasoning:

When people think back to the Presidents pre-1900, how many names do you think the average citizen knows? Two? Maybe Three? Washington and Lincoln (maybe Jefferson). This is not to say that no one knows about all the Presidents (I can name them all along with their terms, parties and major accomplishments if they had any), but only that the average jackass on the street knows nothing of History.

Let's be hypothetical for a moment here and assume that either Clinton or Obama gets elected in '08 (probably pretty likely if Bloomberg doesn't hop in the race). Both of these people have an automatic ticket to be remembered by every school child in two hundred years, simply because of their race and gender. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will be remembered among the "greatest" Presidents of all time because they were the first woman/African-American to be elected.

This turns my stomach upside down, the honor of being the first woman or African-American should go to someone who is eminently more worthy, I mean realistically, Hillary is only in the race because of Bill (Condoleezza Rice isn't married) and Obama has zero experience, three years ago he was in the Illinois State Legislature, really stop and think about that for a moment (if Colin Powell was running he would have more relevant experience than anyone on the stage).

In 200 years, people will remember JFK, not because he was the first Catholic President but because Democrats think he was a strong leader (in reality he was just very charismatic and then got assassinated). Granted, America needs to maintain its reputation as being the land of opportunity, so we need to elect a woman and an African-American, just not these two.

I guess in short my point is that we all can agree that to not vote for Clinton or Obama because of their Gender and Race would be wrong, but I am trying to convince you that voting for them because of it is just as wrong.

Russia's 180

I just found out today that Russia is under a moratorium on the Death Penalty.

This is an example of blatant disregard of moral values by a government that is so narrow-minded that they live solely in the microcosm that is their own bigotry.

This travesty recalls the Taliban's destruction of the Buddha's of Bamyan, the two "monumental statues of standing Buddhas" that were carved during the 6th Century. The Taliban, in their focus on being Islamic Fascists, ignored the rest of the world's plea's of preserving these historic monuments.

Russia is also guilty of this tragic disregard of any modicum of respect towards history.

How can they ignore their strong history of government sponsored death squads by outlawing the only thing similar that is still considered acceptable by modern standards?

The only reason tourists go to Russia anymore is to get a feel for Stalin's Gestapo. Where is the outrage? Since when did Russia become opposed to murder? Do pigs now fly?

I Love the 19th Amendment

The 19th amendment was a milestone in American history. It served as the marker for the overturning of one of the last great civil injustices that old America perpetuated on it's citizens. The final marker was overturned at the conclusion of the Civil Rights movement. Both Women and African-Americans are now equal before the law (except public bathrooms and the draft when it comes to women).

These are all very good things.

Unfortunately there are groups today that are trying to hijack the glorious and noble causes they have grown up hearing stories about. Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were heroes who overcame great adversity and accomplished something of note for society. They held a mirror up to American hypocrisy and forced us to change our horrid ways.

Susan B. Anthony pointed out that while men and women are different, they deserve equal opportunity to pursue the things they desire.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, however, are simply sensationalists searching for their moment in the spot light and wishing they had been born a few decades earlier so they could have participated in a real movement.

Rosie O'Donnell and other "feminists" are just deluding themselves by choosing battles that don't make any sense. Recently, while writing in Microsoft Word, I typed in "businessman." Grammar checked popped up and suggested "Businessperson." This really chafes my ass, because the words are "fireman," "policeman," "businessman," and "mailman." I reject the existance of the word "firewoman." If they really want a feminized version of the word, they can call themselves "firemanette."

I do not feel like getting in to the Gay 'Rights' movement today. Suffice it to say that I do not have the right to marry a guy, and neither does a gay man. There is no inequality here.

My Last Doubts Assuaged

O'REILLY: Would you build a wall between Mexico and the United States and would you put the National Guard on the border?

ROMNEY: Absolutely. We'd put the National Guard there because we don't have the wall yet. You have to have a wall or a fence or electronic surveillance. And you have to have a tamper-proof document to make sure that people who are here are aliens are identified and registered, and people can not hire them unless they're here legally.
